Yoga Teacher ongoing professional development

So you've qualified as a yoga teacher now what? You probably have a thirst for knowledge and are eager to learn as much as possible about yoga. Take a deep breath, relax and focus. In yoga we are all students, not one person knows everything. Its perfectly acceptable to ask questions or to say to students 'I'm not sure about that but I'll find out'!

Just a few books i have read as part of my quest to learn.

Just a few books i have read as part of my quest to learn.

The best way to learn is by teaching. Start teaching right away to get your foundation in teaching skills and confidence in yourself as a teacher.

Ask yourself ' what are my goals as a yoga teacher'? 'where do I want to be'? and 'what do i enjoy most in my yoga practice?'

What do you want to share with others?

Some of your peers may get straight on to the next course but what about you?

Don't rush into ongoing training. Take your time. Develop your own style of teaching.

See what inspires you as your teaching develops. You may have a natural progression towards restorative or yin yoga or lean towards a stronger practice with inversions and arm balances part of your daily practice.

Speak to other yoga teachers. How did they develop, decide on their style of yoga or find their niche. Find a mentor, someone you can learn from or who can help guide you with their experience. I'm sure your yoga teacher trainer will be a great support and will offer post training support.

Before committing to further study or training, do your research. Check out if courses can be accredited to your affiliated organisation such as bet or ya as evidence of professional development. Can they be used as part of a 500 hour yoga teacher qualification? Yoga courses are expensive, not just the course cost but travel costs, accommodation and loss of potential income. So it's crucial background work is done before you financially commit to a course.

Try not to feel pressurised or feel inferior when reading other teachers social media accounts. They (I) once stood where you are. It can be a confusing and difficult time whist you are developing your confidence and style as a yoga teacher. Just remember they are selling a product and you can learn from what they post in relation to business acumen or even yoga practice!

Welcome to the exciting journey as a yoga teacher. Take your time in deciding on your route of further training. Remember that enjoying the journey is as important as reaching your desired destination.

Namaste.
